ORDER OF WORSHIP
11th Sunday after Pentecost
August 13, 2023
PRELUDE
WELCOME
CALL TO WORSHIP
We gather together to worship God, who comes to us when we least expect it,
God calls us out of the safety of our ordered lives and invites us to join Him in the adventure of faith.
All: Let’s worship God together!
*HYMN: #457 (Blue) ‘I Greet Thee, Who My Sure Redeemer Art’
I greet Thee, who my sure Redeemer art,
My only trust and Savior of my heart,
Who pain didst undergo for my poor sake;
I pray Thee from our hearts all cares to take.
Thou art the King of mercy and of grace,
Reigning omnipotent in every place:
So come, O King, and our whole being sway;
Shine on us with the light of Thy pure day.
Thou art the life, by which alone we live,
And all our substance and our strength receive;
Sustain us by Thy faith and by Thy power,
And give us strength in every trying hour.
Thou hast the true and perfect gentleness,
No harshness hast Thou and no bitterness:
O grant to us the grace we find in Thee,
That we may dwell in perfect unity.
Our hope is in no other save in Thee;
Our faith is built upon Thy promise free;
Lord, give us peace, and make us calm and sure,
That in Thy strength we evermore endure.
CALL TO CONFESSION
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God, You call us to step out in faith, to place our lives in Your hands, and to wholeheartedly commit to following You. We confess that we find this difficult to do. It is not always easy to follow where You lead—to turn away from our own personal wants and desires, to step out of the safety of our own sheltered lives, let go of our safety nets, and trust that You will provide for us in all things. Forgive us when we doubt You, God. Increase our faith. Open our eyes to see past our own interests and concerns, to Your broader vision for us and for our world. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen. (silent reflection)
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
*GLORIA PATRI
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,
And to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
World without end. Amen, Amen.

SCRIPTURE READINGS
Psalm 105:1-7 (Contemporary English Version) Read Responsively
1 Praise the Lord and pray in his name! Tell everyone what he has done.
2 Sing praises to the Lord! Tell about his miracles.
3 Celebrate and worship his holy name with all your heart.
4 Trust the Lord and his mighty power.
5 Remember his miracles and all his wonders and his fair decisions.
6 You belong to the family of Abraham, his servant;
you are his chosen ones, the descendants of Jacob.
7 The Lord is our God, bringing justice everywhere on earth.
Gospel Matthew 14:22-33
22Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. 25And early in the morning he came walking toward them on the sea. 26But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out in fear. 27But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.”
28Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus. 30But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” 32When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

*HYMN (in bulletin) ‘Tis so Sweet to Trust in Jesus’
‘Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just to take him at his word,
Just to rest upon his promise,
Just to know, “Thus saith the Lord.”
Refrain:
Jesus, Jesus, how I trust him!
How I’ve proved him o’er and o’er!
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
O for grace to trust him more!
O how sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just to trust his cleansing blood,
Just in simple faith to plunge me
‘Neath the healing, cleansing flood! [Refrain]
Yes, ‘tis sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just from sin and self to cease,
Just from Jesus simply taking
Life and rest, and joy and peace. [Refrain]
I’m so glad I learned to trust you,
Precious Jesus, Savior, Friend,
And I know that you are with me,
Will be with me to the end. [Refrain]
AFFIRMATION OF FAITH—APOSTLES’ CREED (in unison)
I believe in God the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; he descended into hell; the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
INVITATION TO OFFERING
SPECIAL MUSIC #404 (Blue) ‘Precious Lord, Take My Hand’ (congregation join)
Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, help my stand:
I am tired, I am weak, I am worn;
Through the storm, through the night, lead me on to the light;
Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.
When my way grows drear, precious Lord, linger near;
When my life is almost gone,
Hear my cry, hear my call, hold my hand lest I fall;
Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.
When the darkness appears and the night draws near;
And the day is past and gone,
At the river I stand guide my fee, hold my hand;
Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.
Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, help my stand:
I am tired, I am weak, I am worn;
Through the storm, through the night, lead me on to the light;
Take my hand, precious Lord, lead me home.
*DOXOLOGY
Praise God from whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly hosts;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

*CLOSING HYMN #361 (Blue) ‘How Firm a Foundation’
How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord,
Is laid for your faith in God's excellent Word!
What more can be said than to you God hath said,
To you who for refuge to Jesus have fled?
"Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed,
For I am thy God, and will still give thee aid;
I'll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand,
Upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand.
"When through the deep waters I call thee to go,
The rivers of sorrow shall not overflow;
For I will be near thee, thy troubles to bless,
And sanctify to thee thy deepest distress.
"When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie,
My grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply;
The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design
Thy dross to consume, and thy gold to refine.
"The soul that on Jesus hath leaned for repose,
I will not, I will not desert to its foes;
That soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake,
I'll never, no, never, no, never forsake."
